Troels Jensen & Jorgen Lang [DK]
Roedovre Centrum 10/2 - 4:30 pm - Adm. free
Two genuine blues musicians with a common past. Jorgen was a guest on Troels' famous
Delta record "No overdubs", which also featured Billy Cross as a guest, before he settled
in with the Delta Cross Band.
Later Troels and Jorgen toured the country as an acoustic duo, earning the nickname
'the Katzenjammer Kids', which they kind of liked themselves.
Soon they expanded into a full band - The Katzenjammer Kids, and now, years later,
Troels and Jorgen are back together, Jorgen even as a permanent member of the now
revived Delta Blues Band.
Ana Popovich Band [YU/US/IT/NL]
Roedovre Centrum 10/2 - 5:30 pm - Adm. free
Ana Popovic is one of the most promising young Blues talents of today.
She was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1976. Her father’s extensive record
collection and music sessions at home introduced Ana to the blues.
She took to the guitar and founded her first band at age nineteen, and
within a year, she went to play outside of Yugoslavia, incl. opening shows
for American blues icons like Junior Wells.
She relocated to the Netherlands in 1999 to study jazz guitar, and quickly
became a fixture on the Dutch blues scene and has now reached enormous
popularity all over Europe, even in the United States, and has played all the
major music festivals of Europe.
Beside a busy tour schedule she has released a CD every second year,
incl. a live-CD in 2005.
On her latest CD, “Blind for Love”, released this summer, Ana offers a blend
of blues, rock, jazz, funk and gospel.
Her live performance is a winning mixture of traditional blues with elements of
R&B and soul, and the blues rock of the 21st century, guaranteed to thrill any
blues crowd !
On this visit to Copenhagen she brings her highly competent, internationally
composed live and studio band - from The Netherlands, Italy and the US.

Paul Banks & Jakob Dinesen [DK]
Café 5-Oeren 10/2 - 7 pm - Adm. free
A duo-collaboration is a demanding discipline,
which never lets either participant off the hook
for very long.
It is also an art form in which simplicity is a keyword.
Paul Banks is a true one-man-band, and his guitar is
the lyrical and grooving engine of this duo.
Jakob Dinesen’s tenor goes from slender translucency
to raspy, growling swing. It is a perfect fit.

CHICAGO BLUES NIGHT

Jimmy Johnson with Mike Andersen Band [US/DK]
Pumpehuset 10/2 8 pm Adm. 170,- Buy at: Billetlugen
Jimmy Johnson belongs at the absolute top of Chicago blues artists, along with Buddy Guy
and Otis Rush and a few others. He’s one of the modern Chicago blues idiom’s most impressive
singers and guitarists, who combines his searing, gospel-influenced vocal and progressive and
sophisticated jazz-inspired guitar playing into a very unique and original style.
And as a songwriter, he has renewed the genre, taking up current or controvecial issues
- a far way away from traditional blues clichés.
He was born 1928 in Holly Springs, Miss., baptized James Thompson, later changed to Johnson
like his famous soul-singing brother, Syl Johnson. Jimmy lived and worked in Miss. as a welder,
singing a bit of gospel, which has kept his interest to this day, before in 1950 following in his brother's
footsteps he moved to Chicago to pursue a musical career. For the next 20 years he played soul
and R & B as the guitar player with Magic Sam, Freddie King, Slim Willis, Otis Clay, Denise LaSalle a.o.

From the mid-70'es he returned to his blues roots, becoming a full-time blues man, playing all
over the world as a sideman for Jimmy Dawkins and Otis Rush, before, in 1978, at the age of 50,
he began recording his own music. His unique style caught on, and since then he has issued a
series of albums, including the excellent "Johnson's Whacks", 1979, "Bar Room Preacher", 1983,
and "North/South", 1982. In 2002 he recorded "Two Johnsons are Better than One" with brother Syl.

25 years has passed since Johnson's last visit here, but even today, at 81 years of age, he looks,
plays and sings, as he always has - no old-man blues there ! - check it out yourself on YouTube!
It is with pride and honor that Copenhagen Blues Festival and Pumpehuset present Jimmy Johnson,
backed by our very own soul-blues man No. 1, Mike Andersen.
This is The Blues Scoop of the year
- and perhaps one of the last chances to meet this all times great Chicago blues artist in Copenhagen.

Mike Andersen Band [DK]
Mike Andersen, with two albums out, and hundreds of concerts throughout Europe
under his belt, has found his own style of contemporary influencies and classic soul and blues
- without being weighed down by tradition.
His strong vocal and guitar playing, his compositions, the glowing commitment and
showmanship in his performances attracts a widely growing audience at home and abroad,
and lately the band has delivered convincing performances including support for The Fabulous
Thunderbirds and B.B. King on several occasions.
Mike says: "We do not distinguish between genres, but draws from all elements of the
Afro-American music that we love so much".
There is a new album on it's way, and Mike's many fans in Copenhagen may rejoice
to hear the new tracks on this great evening at Pumpehuset.

Nisse Thorbjorn CPH Slim [DK]
Mojo 10/2 - 10 pm - Adm. 70,-
Nisse Thorbjorn - CPH Slim - proves with his debut CD what his fan crowd has known all along:
Here is a trulu skilled and talented genuine Bluesman! "CPH Slim" gives you the essence of the
great musical development, that he has undergone since the blues festival audience met him
for the first time in 2001.
As a solo performer, Nisse sounds like an entire band with his relentless, world class voice,
brilliant guitar and harmonica. But with his band, authenticity, originality and musical intensity
gets a whole new meaning.
The band's repertoire includes respectful interpretations of heroes like Blind Lemon Jefferson and
Howlin 'Wolf, but also Nisse's own material, played in an unmistakable, tight Chicago Blues style.

Nisse has invited several guest-artists to join him on the debut CD, who all contributes to the quality
and versatility of the songs - the late Peter Thorup (his last recording), Kira Skov, Paul Banks, Rune
Kjeldsen and Rasmus Dissing.
"I believe, we got something good here." Peter Thorup.br> The CD has been under way for some time, but it certainly has been worth the wait.

Mud Morganfield & Peter Nande Band [US/DK]
Roedovre Centrum 10/3 - 2 pm - Adm. free
If you say McKinley Morganfield a lot of people pay attention, but if you say Muddy Waters,
the attention will grow considerably. Muddy Waters, the"Hoochie Coochie Man", the father
of the electric blues, who died rather young in 1983. But his legacy lives on, a legacy which
was previously taken up by one of Muddy Waters sons, Big Bill Morganfield, and now also
the oldes son, Mud Morganfield, born in 1954, under the name Larry Williams.
The ever touring father kept in touch with ‘Little Mud’, but even if he was always involved with
music on a personal level, it’s only recently he has stepped forward for real - primarely to
honour his father’s music, but also to add his own profile and musical contribution.
He has a big, charismatic voice which definitely has similarities to Muddy’s.
His looks are also very close to his father’s, and one of Muddy’s old musicians has said:
“It’s like seeing a ghost !”
Mud has released two CD’s, “Fall Waters Fall” in 2008, and later the same year, the live CD
”With the Dirty Aces Live”, and Mud was nominated for best blues act in the 2008 by Chicago
Music Awards.
Earlier this year, Mud was on tour with Peter Nande Band, and this is the reason, why the festival,
through Peter, has invited Mud for these two Saturday concerts at Roedovre Centrum and at Mojo.
With this year’s festival theme, the Chicago Blues, it hardly gets any better, and everything is set

Delta Blues Band [DK]
Karensminde 10/3 - 7 pm / doors 6 pm - Adm. 100,-

Arr. by Sydhavnens Musikforening - the pavillion
After the comeback at last year’s festival Delta is still going strong. As one of the most important founders of the blues scene in Denmark back in -68, the band started as Delta Blues & Boogie Band. In a later version, as Delta Cross Band, they had a major success in the eighties, and last year's comeback showed that the audience is still there. The centre person through the bands 41 years history, is still vocalist, guitarist and piano player Troels Jensen, the 'grand old man' of Danish blues – backed by his faithful crew, who been part of the band, on and off since the beginning. Delta is about to release a new CD, "Checkin' In", where the band, now with Jørgen Lang as a permanent fifth band member, explores new roads, but it’s still hand played first-rate blues.

Not many bands in this country play the special Hill Country blues from Northern Mississippi,
for which R.L. Burnside was particularly famous. Fried Okra has had a lot of inspiration from
playing with Burnside’s guitarist, Kenny Brown, and has started to master this style, which is
usually reserved for American musicians, and primarely released on the Mississippi record
company Fat Possum.
It’s a modern, primitive, often one chord, trashy type of blues, for which they received a lot of
praise on the debut CD, "This is your Chance, Baby!" The CD was nominated for a Danish
Music Awards Folk, and they’re now ready with the next one, "Black Cherry".

Thorbjorn Risager Band [DK]
Roedovre Centrum 10/4 - 2 pm - Adm. free
With the release of his fourth CD in only five years, Thorbjørn Risager can take stock of a career, which in record-breaking time has brought him and his band to the forefront of the European blues scene. Over the last few years, 38 years old Risager has established a name for himself as a vocalist, guitar player and composer of international class.
From nature he is equipped with an extraordinary powerful and expressive voice and a charismatic and outgoing performance. Always impeccably suited up, soft hat on his head, a well-played guitar over his shoulder, a tight, top-tuned band behind him, he has definitely made his mark. The style is still mainly Rhythm’n’Blues, but as the new CD clearly demonstrates, the band competently masters a broad and varied blues menu of traditional Chicago, soul, funk and jazz along with some spicy New Orleans rhythms.
The influence from some of Thorbjorn’s great idols, like Ray Charles and B B King, can’t be dismissed, but with his unmistakable talent as a composer, he has developed his very own personal and unique style ever since he started the band in 2001.
Thorbjorn has received lots of praise along the way: great international CD and concert reviews, the award ”Blues Artist of the Year” at Copenhagen Blues Festival in 2005, and a Danish Music Award nomination in 2008. The two previous releases play regularly at more than 60 radio stations worldwide.
All of this is obliging, and on ”Live at Victoria”, as well as at any live performance, the band does it’s very best to live up to the high expectations.
The new live CD was recorded over two great concert nights at Victoria in Malmö, Sweden, in October, 2008. The 11 tracks have been hand-picked from the concerts and carefully put together, condensing the two nights into one super concert, that will capture the listener ’till the last note has faded out.

BLUES SERVICE

'The Devil in the Blues'
Grundtvigs Kirke 10/4 - 2 pm - Fri entré
Rev. Palle Kongsgård will host a blues service with the theme ”The Devil in the Blues”
as part of this year’s festival.
'As badman and trickster, the black blues musician was seen as the personification of evil.
In a nocturnal meeting with the devil at 'the Crossroad', the singer received the blues magic
power (in exchange for his soul).
On one hand, the blues therefore was feared as “The Devils music”, on the other, the blues
singer was seen as a hero with supernatural powers to settle with the white’s oppression.
In the showdown with the sacred, the blues itself became sacred'.
Palle, himself a musician, touches this side of the blues mythology in Robert Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson a.o. After the service there's a concert with three major capacities in southern blues.

GOSPEL KONCERT

Ladies Sing the Gospel [DK]
Christians Kirke 10/4 - 3:30 pm - Adm. 100,-
This Sunday afternoon Copenhagen’s three blues mama's
- better known as 'Ladies Sing The Blues'
- will fire up their gospel boiler.
Blues and gospel are close in styles, the lyrics a bit different, but the expression and the power is the same.
'The Ladies' are amongst the festivals regular staff - the story, in short, is that back in 2001 the festival committee
asked Ane, Lene and Lea to join forces for a festival soul & gospel concert.
It went so well, that the cooperation has lasted ever since.
Last year, The Ladies released their long awaited CD, ”Uh Oh Yeah !”, showing the bands broad musical spectre
- ”Uh” for the sensual, ”Oh” for the sensitive and ”YEAH!” for the powerful.
This afternoon’s church concert presents gospel from "the old school" traditionals and spirituals to the more modern, funky stuff with songs by a. o. Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Keb' Mo'.
