JW Jones Band [CAN] feat. Little Charley Baty [US]
Roedovre Centrum Oct. 2 1 pm - Adm. free

Two strong guitar aces meet in Copenhagen:
The young JW Jones, Canada and the older veteran, Charlie Baty, USA.
They started collaborating in 2008 with a swinging rockin’n'rollin’ jump
and Chicago blues CD, both delivering virtuous top class guitar playing.
Baty’s love of Django Reinhardt's gypsy style and elegant swing-jump guitar
is combined with Jones' more raw, youthful and energetic style and sound.

Charlie Baty is primarily known for his many years with the west coast band
'Little Charlie & the Nightcats, an established name at blues festivals and
clubs all over the world, but after their 2008 tour, Baty went into semi-.
retirement. The band carries on under the name Rick Estrin & the Nightcats,
but Baty still joins the band for the odd tour, festival and one-off show.
Charlie Baty may have partly retired from the touring life, but when JW
calls, he’s there!

The 30 year old JW Jones is a busy man - he's constantly touring Canada,
USA, Australia, Brasil and Europe, which he last visited this spring.
He has performed with some of the biggest names in blues today, The
Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Nightcats, Junior Watson, Rusty Zinn, Rod
Piazza & The Mighty Flyers, Anson Funderburgh & The Rockets, Mannish
Boys, Hubert Sumlin and others.
He has won numerous prices in the US and Canada, and has released
several CDs in his own name, produced by Kim Wilson.
He has also appeared on about 10 other CDs in the last 10 years, a. o.
with Ray Charles' legendary saxophone player David "Fathead" Newman.
The buzz this band has created over the last few years has earned them a
national award for Electric Act of the Year at Toronto's Maple Blues Awards
and rave reviews throughout the globe.
'Blues Brother' Dan Akroyd says about JW: "This is an amazing blues band,
and I've played with the best!"
So, come and join us for a rare treat of swingin' blues, when two guitar
generations let go.
Also, don't miss the full concert at Huset, Saturday evening.

Lillian Boutté represents the best of the afro-American music culture,
in a wide specter of jazz, blues, soul and not least gospel. She is however,
first of all an exponent for the music of New Orleans, which she brings out
to the audience all over the world. She has lived in Europe for 25 years, but
regularly travels home to New Orleans, where she is as popular as ever, and
where she in 1986 was nominated “New Orleans Musical Ambassador”, an
honorary title that she shares with Louis Armstrong only.
Besides her great musical talent, she also has a great organizational talent,
which she put to good use in the relief action after the hurricane Katrina in 2005.
She has performed concerts and recorded albums with countless colleagues,
among others James Booker, Henry Butler, Denny Barker, Neville Brothers, Allen
Toussaint and Dr. John, yes even Professor Longhair, and critics compare her to
Bessie Smith, Aretha Franklin and Mahalia Jackson.

blues and gospel concerts at the blues festival, latest in 2007, where she performed
in Roedovre Centrum and in Christian's Church.

charismatic singer Lillian back in town for this year's festival anniversary.

from small club-gigs to big international gospel-shows, and once again, you'll

Ladies Sing the Blues
Qualityworld Oct. 2 3 pm - Adm. 150 DKR - Tickets: www.blueskoncerter.dk

The Ladies are among the festival’s regular ‘staff’.
The story, in short,is, that in 2001 the festival asked Ane Kramme Abildtoft,
Lene Strøyer and Lea Thorlann to create a soul-gospel programme for a
festival concert, and it went tremendously well.
The partnership lasted and they’ve played a concert at every edition of the
festival since then. Two years ago, they released their brilliant first CD: ”Uh Oh Yeah !” - ”Uh” for the sensual, ”Oh” for the emotional and ”YEAH!”
for the powerful.
And that’s exactly, what can be expected on this Saturday afternoon at the
city’s new and rather different venue Qualityworld at Frederiksberg.

Lillian Boutté repræsenterer det bedste af den afro-amerikanske
musikkultur i et bredt spekter af jazz, blues, soul, og ikke mindst
gospel.
James Booker, Henry Butler, Denny Barker, Neville Brothers, Allen

Last year Nisse Thorbjoern, AKA “CPH Slim”, received the festival
award “Danish Blues Name of the Year”, as the serious and original
musician and songwriter, that he is. He proved that with his debut CD,
“CPH Slim”, and he proves it every time that he performs. Nisse solo
equals a whole band with his raw, merciless voice, eminent guitar and
not least world class harp.
When a band is added, the intensity, authenticity, originality and empathy
in the music, gets a whole new meaning.
The repertoire includes respectful interpretations of ideals as Blind Lemon
Jefferson and Howlin' Wolf, but also own material in an unmistakable,
steady and tight Chicago Blues style.

Jacob Fischer Trio
Bartof Oct. 2 9 am - Adm. 70 DKR

”Blues” is the title of jazz guitarist Jacob Fischer's new CD, recorded live at La Fontaine in May 2010.
With the organ virtuoso Martin Schack's sweaty, dirty Hammond organ in Jimmi Smith style, and the
explosive Caspar Mikkelsen's creative and funky drums,Fischer explores all the different shades and
shapes of jazzy blues, from a corrosive blue distorted slide blues, over an light blue jazz-waltz or a
lazy Summer blue bossa nova, to a hot-tempered equilibristic bebop blues, performed by three of the
country's finest jazz musicians.
They see absolutely no reason to hide the fact, that they just love to play.
Formidable jazz-blues for this year's anniversary festival.

The Fried Okra Band [DK]
Christianshavns Beboerhus Oct. 2 9 pm - Adm. 60 DKR

Not many bands in this country play the special Hill Country blues from Northern Mississippi,
for which R.L. Burnside was particularly famous. Fried Okra has had a lot of inspiration from
playing with Burnside’s guitarist, Kenny Brown, and has started to master this style, which is
usually reserved for American musicians, and primarely released on the Mississippi record
company Fat Possum.
It’s a modern, primitive, often one chord, trashy type of blues, for which they received a lot of
praise on the debut CD, "This is your Chance, Baby!" The CD was nominated for a Danish
Music Awards Folk. Their second CD, "Black Cherry", was released at their gig at last year's festival.

The Young Comets
Café Blaagaards Apotek Oct. 2 9 pm - Adm. 20 DKR

The Young Comets started out in 1998at Mojo Blues Bar in Copenhagen, where they played
every Monday for the next two years. The guys' common ground is the roots of blues, folk,
and some plain old rock music, from which they have developed a mature sound and sense
of their musical relationship.
The members of the band have performed in many other relations over the years, a.o. Sort Sol,
Savage Rose, Jens Unmack and Benny Holst, Hanne Boel etc..They have now gathered again,
because they love to play together, and also to promote their latest CD, “It All Comes Back”,
a collection of beautiful and authentic all-American blues and oltime folk songs, a statement
on the band members personal musical influences through the years. BE THERE OR BE SQUARE...

AFRO BLUES NIGHT!

Amar Sundy [FR]
Global Cph Oct. 2 10 pm opens 9 pm
- Adm. 120 DKR Tickets: BILLETnet)

Global Cph takes part in the blues festival for the first time with a double-concert,
focusing on the origin of the blues - Africa.

Amar Sundy in his childhood moved from the desert of Algiers to Paris,
and was admitted among the Parisian street musicians. His special “Desert Blues”
blends music from Sahara with traditional French music and American blues.

For a number of years he played in the US with legends like Albert Collins, B.B.
and Albert King and Screaming Jay Hawkins.
The inspiration from these legends is obvious, but it is still the desert-blues and
his native African roots, that makes Amar Sundy a unique blow of fresh air at
the international blues scene.

www.myspace.com/amarsundy
Roland Tchakounte [FR]

Roland Tchakounte from Cameroun is also living in Paris. His early inspirations
were Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye, at least until he discovered John
Lee hooker, and African and American blues formed a synthesis: "…the music have the
same roots - it showed me the way".

Roland Tchakounte still often sings in his native language Bamileke, but the American
ideals are unmistakably present. But then again, as Tchakounte says: “What's the difference ? Blues and Africa are two sides of the same matter”.

La Fontaine Oct. 2 11 pm - Adm. 70 DKR

Also on this second of two blues festival nights La Fontaine has organized a
special jazz-blues program to present some good blues and jazz based music
for jazz and blues fans alike.
These guys know each other very well, and personalities, the instrumentation and
the musical outcome will catch everyone's attention from beat one.

Mamas Blues Joint [DK]
Mojo Oct. 2 11 pm Adm. 90 DKR

Mama's Blues Joint was formed in 2002 by Lene Strøyer, who is in
front as an extraordinary soulful singer, with a deep love for the Blues”
and an intense live performance. The debut CD, “Mama's Blues Joint”
from 2005, was played on radios the world over, and the song “Missing You”
won awards at international songwriter contests.
The title on the band's latest CD, “Blues In Many Colors”, is very significant
for the band's style of blues, soul, funk, rock and country, with weight on a
good groove. Lene writes most of the songs herself, but the band also
performs well arranged songs by B.B. King, Albert Collins, Etta James,
Delbert McClinton and more.
