Ole Frimer & Olav Poulsen [DK]
Roedovre Centrum Oct. 2 1 PM - Adm. free

The two guitar equilibrists have known each other for many years, and
have created a tight, airy, almost telepathic interaction with each other.

Their repertoire spans from modern, electric funky urban blues to acoustic
style Tex Mex. The songs are a mix from Frimers catalogue, supplemented
with songs from the classic blues repertoire, spiced up with a few good
cock-and-bull stories.

Mud Morganfield & Peter Nande Band [US/DK]
Roedovre Centrum Oct. 2 2 PM - Adm. free

If you say McKinley Morganfield a lot of people pay attention, but if you say Muddy Waters,
the attention will grow considerably. Muddy Waters, the"Hoochie Coochie Man", the father
of the electric blues, who died rather young in 1983. But his legacy lives on, a legacy which
was previously taken up by one of Muddy Waters sons, Big Bill Morganfield, and now also
by the oldest son, Mud Morganfield, born in 1954, under the name Larry Williams.

Mud Morganfield - "Eldest Son of Muddy Waters", as he likes to be announced, started
singing not so many years ago, primarely to honour his father’s music, but also to add .
his own profile and musical contribution to the Blues.

He has a big, charismatic voice with definite similarities to Muddy’s, and also his looks
are very close to his father’s, so much so, that one of Muddy’s old musicians has said:
“It’s like seeing a ghost !”

Mud played with Peter Nande Band at the festival in 2009, and now we welcome him
back, also this time with a regular Chicago style club gig Saturday night, and a short
afternoon matiné concert at Roedovre Centrum this Sunday.

Read more abot Mud and the band under Saturday at Huset.

BLUES GUDSTJENESTE

“When the Blues Came to Town”
Grundtvigs Kirke Oct. 2 1.30 PM - Adm. free

The “Blues service” is held in the cript of Grundtvig's Church.
Reverend Palle Kongsgaard delivers a Sermon on the subject:
“When the blues came to Town”.

"The farm workers brought the blues to the big industrial cities like Chicago, and in the 40'es
and 50'es Chicago became the center of the electric urban blues, played and performed by
people like T-bone Walker, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and B.B. King.

In the blues clubs you could hear the music telling stories about the energy of big city life,
the restlessness, the loneliness, and social exclusion as described in B.B. King's:
“Why I sing the Blues”.

In an attempt to describe today’s big cities' living conditions, that we share with more than
half of the world’s population, the Sermon connects the blues with the symbolic images
of cities, from Sodoma over Babylon to the vision of the New Jerusalem.

After the Service there's a blues concert with Nisse Thorbjorn Band. Nisse, aka "CPH Slim",
is a well known name to the blues audience. He clearly belongs at the top of the younger
Danish blues performers.
In 2009 he released his critically acclaimed debut CD, "Cph Slim", and also received the
festival's award "Danish Blues Artist of the Year".

His tight and authentic urban electric blues style is a perfect match to the theme of the day:
"When the Blues came to Town".

Nisse also plays at this year's festival opening, backing the great John Primer from Chicago
- this is Wednesday at Roedovre Centrum and at Huset.

The Holmes Brothers med special guest Anders Gaardmand [US/DK]
Christians Kirke Oct. 2 3.30 PM - Doors 3 PM - Adm. 150 kr. Buy tickets at Billetto

Arr. by Copenhagen Blues Festival

Sherman and Wendell Holmes were born and raised in Christchurch, Virginia.
Their parents fostered the boys' early interest in music as they listened to traditional Baptist hymns,
anthems and spirituals, as well as blues music by Jimmy Reed, Junior Parker and B.B. King.

Both brothers sang in the church choir, Sherman studied the clarinet and piano before taking up
the bass, while Wendell learned the trumpet, organ and guitar. The older brother, Sherman, studied
composition and music theory at Virginia State University, but in 1959, he dropped out and headed
to New York for a promising job with a singer named Jimmy Jones. Wendell joined him after high
school, and the two brothers played in a several bands, backing artists like The Impressions,
John Lee Hooker and Jerry Butler.

Later Sherman, Wendell and a fellow Virginian, drummer Popsy Dixon, played in a variety of Top
40 bar bands, until in 1979 the three of them formed The Holmes Brothers band.
Ever since this incredible trio has been feeding soul and mind of their devoted and ever-growing
fan base with a joyous and moving blend of blues, gospel, soul, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll and country.

Over the years the trio has performed and recorded with artists like Bob Dylan, Van Morrison,
Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Willie Nelson, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Merle Haggard, Keith
Richards, Al Green, Ben Harper, Steve Earle, Levon Helm, Rosanne Cash, Odetta, and others.

Their latest CD, "Feed My Soul", came out in 2010 on Alligator Records, and even if Sherman,
Wendell and Popsy are all close to 70 years old, they continue to tour all across the globe, and
never fail to win over their audiences everywhere they play.

We are very proud to present this icon of American roots, blues and gospel music at this years
Copenhagen Blues Festival. - Saturday afternoon at Roedovre Centrum, and Sunday afternoon

For the Gospel concert at Christian's Church the trio gets musical assistance from the Danish
saxophone player Anders Gaardmand. In 1983 he moved to New York, and during his 10 years
at the New York R'n'B scene he often played concerts with The Holmes Brothers, and can also
be heard on their 1989 CD ”In the Spirit”. In the same period he also played with prominent
artist like Dr.John, Otis Rush, Etta James, Ronnie Earl etc.
In 1993 he returned to the Danish jazz- and blues scene, now holdin a permanent position
