Linsey Alexander med Nisse Thorbjoern Band [US/DK]
Roedovre Centrum Sept. 27 5.30 PM - Adm. free

AND:

Husets Café Sept. 27 8 PM - Adm. 160 DKR. Tickets: Billetto

Linsey Alexander hails from the deep blues country. He was born in 1942 in Holly Springs,
Mississippi and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. He is a classic blues songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist.
Music critic Jim White calls Alexander a "still-present, real-deal bluesman with deep, rich, gritty vocals
and guitar work as strong as his vocals". Alexander plays his own style of electric blues, influenced by
soul, R&B, and funk. The original material he writes contributes to the survival of the blues genre.
The sense of humor in his music and stage performance sets him apart from most other blues cats,
and he plays his guitar, like he was still just 20 year old.
Alexander has been a fixture in Chicago North Side clubs for nearly two decades and has played
with blues notables including Buddy Guy, Little Milton, Magic Slim, and B.B. King. His debut CD on
Delmark, “Been There Done That”, was rated the best blues CD of the year 2012.
In the CD's liner notes writer David Wheitis says: "The songs combine streetsy toughness with an
eclectic approach that reflects Linsey's diverse musical influences. Although most of what's here
is rooted solidly in the postwar blues tradition, there are strong flavorings of deep soul and funk-
driven R&B. 'I like the traditional,' Linsey says, 'then I like my sound, and I try to get it all there
together, where they can really combine together and make one thing. I hear a lot of guitar players
all playing the same - all trying to sound like somebody else. I don't want to be known for that.
When you hear me, I want you to know who I am. I'm still living; I still got a story to tell.'
About 1960 Linsey left Memphis to move to Chicago, and he was swept up in the busy blues/r&b/soul
music scene, and got to meet Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf.
His first real band was the Equitable Band, that for eight straight years played the Launching Pad on
Chicago's south side. Here, he discovered that the South side was a down to earth place, that truly
understood and also appreciated his music.
In much the same way as many great blues artists before him, he grew up in a poor, but honest and
hard working family, learning early on that music has the power to lift the spirit and comfort the soul.
In Linsey's own words, "Blues music is not hard - it's just a documentary about life".
In Chicago, Alexander had a series of jobs that included working for a car dealer, at a gas station,
and as a cook and bus boy. He eventually joined the Chicago Police Department, but retired with a
pension after he was wounded in the line of duty.
The blues festival has invited Alexander as a special festival guest to perform a couple of concerts
here, backed by one of the local top acts, Nisse "Cph Slim" Thorbjoern and his band. Nisse received
the festivals award, "Danish Blues Artist of the Year" in 2009. in 2011 he did a great job backing
another great Chicago blues man, John Primer, at the festival. This has since developed into a
permanent collaboration, when Primer is in Europe.
Maybe even Linsey Alexander will develop a taste for future touring the European blues scene !

NB ! On Thursday you can get to know Linsey Alexander in a more intimate setting, when he
appears in an "Artist Talk" at the Copenhagen Main Library. Come on in and listen to his tales
about his personal experience as a long-time Chicago blues man of the first order.
Admittance is free.

Jimmy Burns m. The Fried Okra Band [US/DK]
Mojo Sept. 27 7 PM - doors 6 PM - Adm. Entré 170 kr.

Jimmy Burns is a Chicago blues man with his Delta and Gospel roots intact, with a warm,
soulful voice, a contemporary sound and a R'n'B-soul-funk infused style, uniquely his own.
"To me, there's only one kind of music, and that is good music", says Jimmy Burns - singer,
guitarist, songwriter, and younger brother of renowned Detroit bluesman Eddie Burns.
Born near Dublin, Mississippi in 1943, Burns was fascinated by music early on. He loved the
sounds coming out of the church, and the blues he heard on the streets. Burns’ sang in church
and taught himself how to play guitar while he was still in the Delta. At 12, the family moved to
Chicago, and Burns started singing with a gospel group called the Gay Lites. In 1959, at the age
of 16 he joined The Medallionaires, an established vocal group, and did some recording.
Burns also became part of the folk scene in the early 60'es. He played at The Fickle Pickle,
(booked at that time by Mike Bloomfield), the Gate of Horn, and coffeehouses around town.
As R&B turned to soul in the 60s Burns cut a few soul singles for the USA, Minit, Tip Top
and Erica labels. He traveled throughout the Midwest, with a band called the Fantastic Epics,
appearing at the Arie Crown Theatre in Chicago on a bill with Jeff Beck and the Yardbirds.
He formed his own band in the late 60s called Jimmy Burns and the Gas Company.
During the 70’s and 80’s he concentrated on raising a family, but continuing to play clubs and
concert venues around town.
With the blues never far from his soul, Burns returned to playing full-time in the mid-nineties,
and it wasn’t long before Bob Koester of Delmark Records signed him to record a CD. Leaving
Here Walking was a hit right out of the gate, winning several awards. National and international
tours followed, as Burns played to enthusiastic club- and festival crowds across the country,
and in Europe, Canada, and Japan too.
Several albums later, incl. a DVD/CD release in 2007 and the newest album “Stuck in the Middle”,
Burns is ready to present his soulful, rockin’ blues and R&B to the audience at the Copenhagen
Blues Festival, and to rock the house with his Danish backing band, The Fried Okra Band.

Morten Lunn of The Fried Okra Band met Jimmy Burns in Chicago a couple of years ago, and he
was so impressed with Burns' guitar style, that he asked for guitar lessons. But Burns kindly refused,
arguing that: ”I’m still learning myself”.
And that he has learned a thing or two, is prooven without a doubt, when he performs his soulful
blues during his visit to this year's Copenhagen Blues festival.
We are happy to have him !

The Deepers [DK]
Karens Minde Kulturhus Sept. 27 8.30 PM - Adm. 90 kr. Tickets: ebillet

The Deepers are a unik bid for a modern blues and roots inspired music, with a mood sound,
unlike anything before on the Danish blues scene, raw energy, with the focus on detail and
harmony. The project had it's start at guitarist and singer David Kampmann's 45-year birthday
concert, the response from the audience was overwhelming, resulting in the 'birth' of the band.
The goal has been to “create blues-based original material, rounded off with the same primal
power as the classics from the 20's and 30's, with a personal touch”, say the Deepers.
The band have their second CD in the making, “Deeper Than Yesterday”, all twelve numbers
are the bands own songs, combining tradition and regeneration to a strong personal universe.

that year's blues festival , their success has just continued.
Still in front is singer, guitarist and piano player Troels Jensen

Rattlers have existed since the beginning of the 90ties. The band started out as a
clean cut blues band with a large number of club concerts and support jobs for
some big acts, like Walter Trout.
Since then, the style has changed, and today Rattlers is more rock'n'roll.
But you still get the great songs by ZZ Top, Hendrix, Billy Idol and Led Zeppelin.
Sweaty rock/blues with power.

Michael Denners new band “Denners Trickbag”, will this year at the blues festival preform a
special concert, there will be licks and rifs for all it's worth. Denner is renown as one of the
countries best guitarists. He is probably best known for his work with Hank Shermann in their
bands 'Brats' and 'Mercyful Fate'. The last couple of years has seen Denner with a low profile
behind the disk of his Copenhagen record shop “Beat Bop”. He is now back on the scene with
his new “Trickbag”. The band promises an unwarranted large number of guitar solos this evening,
we believe them. See you at Bardof Station.

Her Name & Mine - Blues Dance Night [DK]
Charlie Scott's Sept. 27 10 PM - Adm. 50 kr.

It becomes hot, tight and intimate, when Her Name and Mine combine blues and dance during
“Blues Dance Night”. The band emerged to this world in the dark days of fall in the year 2010,
with the mission of centring on the soul of 'Blues of the South', as it was played in New Orleans
in the beginning of the nineteenth century.
They have followed their hearts and ears and concocted a repertoire not only of blues-songs
but also great jazz- and country standards, exposed to the bands unique translations, without
loosing their blues - sound and feeling. Bring your dancing shoes and partner, and let the music
and dancing floor become one, on this special evening at... ”Charlie Scott's”.

Sean Carney [US/DK]
Mojo d. Sept. 27 10 PM - Adm. 120 kr. Tickets: Mojo

It’s no accident that Sean Carney’s career has been arcing steadily upward. The Columbus, Ohio
bluesman has it in his family genes, with jazz horn players in the previous two generations.
He’s put in at least his share of work and dues laying the foundation as he enters his third decade
as a pro. Onstage locally he mastered his craft backing a wide array of local and national R & B
greats such as Christine Kittrell and Jimmy “T-99” Nelson and making it known that he was a
skilled and tasteful guitarist and vocalist.
In 1998 he recorded his debut CD, "Provisions" (re-packaged in 2007 with the inclusion of Kittrell’s
last recordings). He gained exposure and experience serving as vocalist Teeny Tucker’s musical
director and co-writer. Offstage he was a tireless advocate for those same artists, the blues and
jump they represented and the area’s musical heritage, writing articles, being a dj, promoting
concerts and serving three terms as President of the Columbus Blues Alliance.

Sean’s profile has gotten a major boost in the last five busy years, and in fact is decidedly
international these days when European tours often in the company of major historical figures
have become almost routine for him. Drummer Eric Blume, who performed with Sean for over
a decade, and Sean founded Nite Owlz Records in 2006 and issued Sean’s CD Life Of Ease.
It was a welcome surprise and a triumph of substance when The Sean Carney Band won the
Albert King Best Guitarist and took first place at the 2007 International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
His 2007 and 2008 Blues For A Cure shows and CDs raised over $50(),000 for the cause.
In 2009 his 2007 Canadian recording Live Blues On Whyte was released. He has performed
worldwide with Big Joe Duskin, Duke Robillard, Charlie Baty, Columbus standby Willie Pooch,
Hank Marr, Joe Weaver, Johnnie Bassett, Sir Mack Rice and Hal Singer as well as his own group.
As his visibility has grown, so has the growing realization that Sean is a noteworthy, sophisticated
master of tone and taste with a broad appreciation for the music before him and around him and a
knack for turning out interesting songs. His discography has shown a solid, well-considered approach
and, as he puts it, “solid songs and tight arrangements.” And his reputation as a talent, a respecter
of tradition and a humble and gracious person has become deservedly widespread.
With recent studio recordings with Duke Robillard and Jimmy Thackery, Sean Carney reaffirms his
importance and value as a part of the blues scene he has supported so tirelessly for so long.
It’s extra easy to root for him because of all the good he’s done and the road he’s taken.
But even someone who knows nothing about him is bound to take notice of this grounded, savvy
and rewarding musical affirmation of so many great things about Sean Carney and the blues.
