EARL THOMAS [US] and CHRIS THOMAS KING [US]
Bartof Station - Saturday Oct. 1st 8 pm - Adm. 200 kr.- Tickets: Billetto

Earl Thomas is a powerful, charismatic and very expressive blues and soul singer/songwriter.
He sings, so the ground shakes with his super tight band behind. Blues Blast Magazine calls him a “blues and soul superstar”, and Best of Blues Magazine “the most important blues artist of his generation”.
With an infectious enthusiasm and joy of being on stage he sings expressive blues with body and soul in every line. His voice has so much sound that one immediately thinks of the great soul singers Ike and Tina Turner, Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke and Etta James, who are his big sources of inspiration.
He is a master of all the blue colored notes from the gentle and soft and occasionally almost delta-like to the more raw, rocking and danceable. The music is a mix of blues, rock, soul and funk, which appeals to a wide audience.
Earl Thomas is from San Diego, California, but originates from Tennessee. Born in 1960 and grew up with gospel, country and blues. His mother sang gospel, his father, grandfather and his uncle were all bluesmen, and his uncle played with Buddy Guy. Earl Thomas got the blues under the skin from childhood. However, he never picked up a microphone in his life until he was nearly killed after a fall accident. At the age of 22 he revised his life and decided to pursue his dream of becoming a singer, and quit the dental studies. After this decision, things have developed rapidly.
In 1991 he released his first album, “Blue...Not Blues”, strongly influenced by his parents' love of blues and gospel music and his own affinity for '60s and '70s soul. His song "I Sing the Blues" became a hit for Etta James, and has been recorded by Shemekia Copeland, too. After this, he played with such artists as Elvis Costello and B.B. King. Through the years his music has been covered by Tom Jones, Etta James, Solomon Burke, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Tracy Nelson, Janiva Magness, Shemekia Copeland, Big Lou Johnson and Will Wilde. Earl Thomas has twice been nominated for a Grammy Award and has won the San Diego Music Award four times.
Earl Thomas has now released 14 albums and is ‘still going strong’. With the release of his latest album, CROW from 2016, he proves, once again that he is an artist with undeniable talent and lasting appeal. The new release is a return to his blues-driven roots with a fresh contemporary vibe. He sings with a charismatic and authentic style straight from the heart.
Following the album CROW Earl Thomas is on tour with a super band including former Curtis Salgado heavyweights, keyboardist Dave Fleschner and guitarist Vyasa Dodson, along with Bill Athens on bass, and drummer Tom Goicoechea, who provide the perfect backdrop for his unique blues and soul style.
Earl Thomas is an enthusiastic artist, who has amassed a devoted worldwide fan base. He is known for his engaging live shows and a personal connection to his listeners through his music.
With his tight band, Earl Thomas creates an atmosphere of fun and playfulness on stage. His dynamic stage show described as one part Sam Cooke, one part Otis Redding, one part Al Green, and ten parts Earl Thomas has been impressing audiences around the world for more than two decades. His direct approach and engaging personality has given him the opportunity to perform opening shows for Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Etta James, B. B. King, and Ike Turner.
Earl Thomas is also the lead singer in the late Ike Turner's legendary “Kings of Rhythm”.
In his song ”Last Train to Paris”, Earl Thomas’ expresses how nice Copenhagen is in the summertime.
Now he returns to the city for the Copenhagen Blues Festival this autumn, and the audience can look forward to a great soulful, energetic and entertaining performance.

Chris Thomas King was born in 1962 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His father owned "Tabby's Blues Box" and raised Chris Thomas from his early years into the old blues tradition. Playing guitar and singing Chris started touring as a young boy with local "swamp blues"-musicians. At the age of just twenty-three he was discovered and named as the last major folk blues discovery of the 20th Century. After his first two records as the darling of blues: "Blue Beat" (1984) and "The Beginning" (1986), he turned the blues world upside down. In 1990 he released the record "Cry of the Prophets" on which he embraced hip hop modernity and digital aesthetics. The Blues Mafia - a consortium of folklorists, record collectors, and researchers felt betrayed by King and denounced him in the music press across the United States.
King moved to Europe in 1993 and went on to write and produce a series of ground breaking recordings including “21st Century Blues” and “My Pain Your Pleasure". The French were enthralled by King’s subversive bohemian stance and was lauded a genius for his transcendent folk art, which he coined twenty-first-century blues. All though he was celebrated as an expatriate artist he decided to return to New Orleans in 1996 to contend for the soul of the blues. But he found it difficult to re-enter the traditional American market, from which he had been exiled.
Nevertheless, King was chosen by the Coen brothers to play the role of itinerant bluesman Tommy Johnson together with George Clooney in the movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou? ” (2000) The movie was a major success and as an authentic folk blues artist King got new fans all over the world and inspired a new generation of musicians. He sold millions of records and won numerous awards and this silenced his critics.
Thirty years after becoming the last major folk blues discovery of the 20th Century, Chris Thomas King is today, one of the most important artists in the world for having changed the way we think of blues.
His latest records are ‘Antebellum Postcards’ (2011) and ‘Bona Fide’ (2012).

The audience can look forward to a fantastic musical experience. King plays solo
Thursday and Saturday in Copenhagen, and Friday at Slotsbio in Hillerød.

Piekartz/Blicher/Hemmer/Kirk [DK/NL]
La Fontaine - Saturday Oct. 1st 10 pm - Adm. 80 kr.

In 2014, an album was released in the Netherlands, in record time it was the highest selling
jazz release in the Netherlands this year. It was especially the amazing guest appearance
on the album by the young singer and pianist Daniel von Piekartz. His eminent piano playing
and timeless vocal points in direction of both Ray Charles, Etta James, Nat King Cole and
James Brown. Here in town Michael Blicher, Dan Hemmer and Snorre Kirk were looking for
a singer for the band "The Copenhagen Soul Trio", and as they randomly met the young great
talent from Amsterdam, there was mutual musical understanding and love from the first note,
and cooperation was a reality. With a classic sound that moves in the borderland between soul,
jazz and gospel, and with artists such as Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Al Green and Alvin Robinson
as sources of inspiration, the band has played to sold-out houses in Copenhagen and reaped many
praises for their joy of playing and energy.
In 2017 the band takes to the road with a tour in both home and abroad, before they go into the
studio to record their début album.
